: Orchestre National de Jazz Luxembourg

Founded in 2005 as the brainchild of Gast Waltzing, professor of trumpet at the Conservatoire du Luxembourg and Head of the Jazz Department, the ONJL came together to provide a platform for the upcoming talented jazz musicians to hone their skills, write for the formation and play with musicians of the same caliber.

The ONJL looks to contribute to the renewal of the literature for Big Bands as an art form. Each member of the formation is encouraged to write for the band and the ensemble actively seeks outside contributors and collaborations. In this manner, a large and varied new original repertoire for the big band is created.

During Waltzing’s tenure as a leader, the ONJL has played and recorded a first album with George Duke and Didier Lockwood. To ensure constant renewal of the band's musical approach, the leadership of the ensemble is entrusted to a different composer on a regular basis. Guitarist and composer David Laborier took charge of the orchestra to record a second album in 2011 « Who’s Afraid of the Big Bad Band », introducing a new program of original compositions.
The  third CD was composed by the young violonist Jean-Jacques Mailliet and released in 2014. A new album was recorded at L'Abbaye de Neumünster in October 2015. "D-Pierle Vum Da" is a program of Luxembourg popular songs arranged for the Big Band by David Laborier and Jean-Jacques Mailliet.

Since its creation, the ONJL toured through Europe and performed with great artists such as Grammy and Tony-Award winner jazz diva Dee Dee Bridgwater, Paquito d'Rivera or the German jazz musician Helge Schneider.

Has played/Will play:

» Jazzthing (LU) about « ONJL feat. George Duke & Didier Lockwood »

« This is a big good band who makes you swing out between a modern rythm on the guitar and vigorous brass. Who said that we should be afraid of the wolf? », Le Jeudi (LU) about « Who’s Afraid of the Big Bad Band »
